The Towns of Western Massachusetts is a compilation of images that our club assembled for three exhibitions that each hung in multiple public galleries from 2017 to 2025. Those exhibitions were 43 Towns (covering Hampden and Hampshire Counties), The Towns of Berkshire County and The Towns of Franklin County.
All told, these exhibits featured one picture from every one of the 101 towns in Western Massachusetts. The images have been provided by 49 members of the Springfield Photographic Society, capturing the uniqueness of the communities, and illustrating their history, culture, public spaces, and natural beauty. Each photographer chose one perspective that they felt was important to understanding their town.
One of the strengths of this collection is the large number of contributing photographers, providing a wider range of perspective than what could have been achieved with one or two contributors. In some photos, you will find an icon of that town. In others, there are surprises. Those photographers with a passion for nature found the natural beauty in their assignment. Other photographers wanted to feature historical sites or local businesses.
Our participants have had fun assembling these exhibits, in many cases going to towns they knew little about and talking to the locals about the town and its photo opportunities. For these reasons, we felt it important to provide a permanent space on our website to showcase these exhibits.
